The Gitrog Monster
The Commander
Deathtouch
At the beginning of your upkeep, sacrifice The Gitrog Monster unless you sacrifice a land.
You may play an additional land on each of your turns.
Whenever one or more land cards are put into your graveyard from anywhere, draw a card.
Guide
Gameplan
Turn lands into card advantage and graveyard fuel, sacrificing and replaying them to draw cards every turn while building toward a combo finish. Ramp aggressively with the extra land drop, then either grind value or assemble the Dakmor Salvage/Gitrog combo to draw your deck.
Strengths
- Massive card advantage from land sacrifice triggers and dredge
- Built-in ramp via extra land drops each turn
- Hosts the powerful Dakmor Salvage infinite-draw combo
- Deep self-mill and graveyard synergies in BG
Weaknesses
- Commander removal forces upkeep land sacrifice or loses Gitrog
- Vulnerable to graveyard hate (Rest in Peace, Bojuka Bog)
- Combo lines are intricate and easily disrupted
- Needs lands in graveyard to enable draws, so a slow start stalls the engine
Key Cards
- Dakmor Salvage — Its dredge enables the signature infinite draw-and-discard combo with Gitrog plus a discard outlet.
- Skirge Familiar — Free discard outlet that turns Dakmor Salvage dredges into infinite card draw and mana.
- Lotus Cobra — Each extra land drop makes mana, exploding your ramp and combo potential.
- Crucible of Worlds — Replays sacrificed lands from the graveyard for endless upkeep fodder and triggers.
- Ramunap Excavator — Creature version of Crucible, fueling recursion and land-based card advantage.
- Splendid Reclamation — Returns all milled lands at once for huge ramp and a flood of draw triggers.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana (Mana Crypt, Dark Ritual) and free discard outlets like Putrid Imp to make the combo more reliable and explosive. Include tutors (Vampiric Tutor, Demonic Tutor, Crop Rotation) to find Dakmor Salvage or your outlet, and a clean payoff like Thassa's Oracle. Round out with strong interaction and graveyard recursion (Eternal Witness, Regrowth) to protect the engine.
