The Commander

Whenever you attack, spells you cast from exile this turn cost {X} less to cast, where X is the number of players being attacked. Exile the top X cards of your library. Until end of turn, you may cast spells from among those exiled cards.

Guide

Gameplan

Attack as many opponents as possible each turn to trigger Liara, exiling cards equal to the number of players attacked and casting them at a steep discount (X less, where X = players attacked). You snowball a wide or aggressive board into a flood of free spells, refilling your hand from exile and overwhelming the table with creatures, burn, and value. The deck wants to swing turn after turn, ideally hitting all three opponents to exile and discount three cards.

Strengths

  • Massive card advantage and cost reduction when attacking multiple opponents at once
  • Rewards going wide, so token and aggro strategies snowball hard
  • Boros has excellent extra-combat and 'attack each opponent' enablers to maximize triggers
  • Casts big spells for nearly free, letting you out-value control decks despite no blue

Weaknesses

  • Must attack to get value, so removal of Liara or being blocked/stalled shuts you off
  • Boros lacks card draw and ramp outside of Liara's engine if she's not on the board
  • Exiled cards are lost at end of turn if you can't cast them (high-cost or off-color hits)
  • Vulnerable to board wipes and Fog effects that blunt the aggressive plan
  • Telegraphs aggression early, drawing removal and pillow-fort responses

Key Cards

  • Combat Calligrapher — Forces all creatures able to block to do so, but more importantly enables wide attacks that hit every opponent for triple Liara value.
  • Aurelia, the Warleader — Extra combat means a second Liara trigger, doubling your exile-and-cast payoff each turn.
  • Bloodthirster — Repeatable extra combats fuel multiple Liara triggers, snowballing into a flood of free spells.
  • Hellkite Tyrant — A huge payoff to cast for cheap off exile that also steals artifacts and threatens an alternate win.
  • Sunbird's Invocation — Stacks with Liara to cast even more cards from the top of your library every time you play a spell.
  • Mind's Desire — With Liara's discount and a few rituals, a single big cast snowballs into a chain of free spells.

Upgrade Path

Add reliable 'attack each opponent' enablers (Combat Calligrapher, Disrupt Decorum, Goblin War Drums) and extra-combat effects (Aggravated Assault, Aurelia) to guarantee maximum triggers. Lean into a curve of high-impact spells you're happy to cast for free, plus protection like Boros Charm and haste enablers so Liara connects the turn she attacks. Tighten ramp with Boros Signet, Arcane Signet, and Smothering Tithe to bridge to the explosive turns.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Overwhelming the table with a wide creature board and repeated combats
  • ▸Casting oversized threats and burn for free off Liara's discount
  • ▸Extra-combat loops with Aurelia or Bloodthirster snowballing into lethal damage
  • ▸Big-spell payoffs like Hellkite Tyrant or massive X-spells closing the game

Archetypes

  • Aggro/Voltron — Liara rewards attacking every opponent, so a wide aggressive board or buffed attackers maximize triggers and discounts.
  • Tokens/Go-Wide — Lots of bodies let you attack all opponents simultaneously for maximum exile count and cost reduction.
  • Spellslinger/Big Spells — The cost reduction lets you cast expensive impulse-drawn spells for free, so a top-heavy curve becomes a feature.
  • Extra Combats — Each combat is another Liara trigger, multiplying your free-cast value through repeated attacks.
