Dina, Essence Brewer
The Commander
Whenever you sacrifice a creature, draw a card. This ability triggers only once each turn.
,
, Sacrifice another creature: You gain X life and put X +1/+1 counters on target creature you control, where X is the sacrificed creature's power.
Guide
Gameplan
Dina turns your sacrifice outlets into a card-draw engine and a way to grind value, refilling your hand once per turn whenever you sac a creature. Build an aristocrats shell with cheap fodder, free sacrifice outlets, and death/sacrifice payoffs, then leverage Dina's activated ability to drain life and snowball counters onto a beater. You win by attrition, recurring sacrifice loops, or by pumping a single threat huge with counters.
Strengths
- Built-in card advantage that keeps an aristocrats deck fueled every turn
- BG has the format's best recursion, tutors, and removal to support sacrifice loops
- Lifegain from her activated ability offsets the life paid to sac outlets like Phyrexian mana and pain effects
- Counter-piling provides an alternate, resilient win route that doesn't rely on combat alone
- Cheap commander at 3 MV that's easy to recast
Weaknesses
- Draw trigger is capped at once per turn, limiting explosive engine turns
- Activated ability is slow at
, tap, and needs both a sac and a target
- Relies on having creatures to sacrifice—gets choked by board wipes and graveyard hate
- Lacks built-in evasion or protection for the counter-target creature
- Off-color removal and artifact/enchantment hate must be sourced from BG only
Key Cards
- Ashnod's Altar — Free, repeatable sacrifice outlet that triggers Dina's draw and ramps into bigger plays.
- Viscera Seer — Free outlet that scrys and reliably enables her once-per-turn draw.
- Pitiless Plunderer — Generates treasure off every death, powering activations and sac fodder loops.
- Mikaeus, the Unhallowed — Combos with a non-Human creature like Walking Ballista for infinite sacrifice triggers and damage.
- Walking Ballista — Counter-payoff and combo piece that converts +1/+1 counters or undying loops into direct damage.
- Bastion of Remembrance — Adds a drain on every creature death, turning sacrifices into a table-wide win condition.
- Grave Pact — Punishes opponents each time you sacrifice, eroding their boards while you draw.
Upgrade Path
Add free sacrifice outlets (Ashnod's Altar, Carrion Feeder, Viscera Seer) and persist/undying engines to enable infinite loops, plus drain payoffs to close games without combat. Lean on BG tutors like Diabolic Intent, Demonic Tutor, and Birthing Pod to assemble combos consistently, and include recursion such as Meren of Clan Nel Toth and Reanimate to grind through removal. Tighten the mana with fast rocks and on-color staples so you can deploy and protect the engine before opponents stabilize.
