Henzie "Toolbox" Torre
The Commander
Each creature spell you cast with mana value 4 or greater has blitz. The blitz cost is equal to its mana cost. (You may choose to cast that spell for its blitz cost. If you do, it gains haste and "When this creature dies, draw a card." Sacrifice it at the beginning of the next end step.)
Blitz costs you pay cost less for each time you've cast your commander from the command zone this game.
Guide
Gameplan
Henzie turns big creatures into hasty, disposable threats by giving them blitz, letting you flood the board with high-impact bodies, swing immediately, and draw a card when they die at end of turn. You ramp into fatties, chain blitz casts that get cheaper each time Henzie is recast, and grind out card advantage and value while ETB/dies triggers do the heavy lifting. You win by repeatedly slamming massive creatures, abusing enter/leave-the-battlefield effects, and going wide or wide-and-tall.
Strengths
- Massive recurring card advantage from blitz's 'draw a card when it dies' on every big creature
- Cheats on cost—each Henzie recast makes blitz costs cheaper, snowballing into multiple fatties per turn
- Surprise haste damage and aggressive tempo opponents struggle to plan around
- Naturally abuses powerful ETB and dies triggers since creatures cycle in and out
- Jund colors give elite ramp, removal, and recursion
Weaknesses
- Highly commander-dependent; the deck stalls hard if Henzie is repeatedly removed and tax climbs
- Blitzed creatures sacrifice themselves, so board presence evaporates without blink/sac payoffs
- Vulnerable to board wipes and graveyard hate that punish the cast-and-die loop
- Can be mana hungry—paying full mana cost for blitz early is expensive
- Targeted removal on a blitzed creature wastes your card and mana before the swing
Key Cards
- Woodland Bellower — Tutors creatures on a blitzed body, turning one big cast into a chain of value.
- Craterhoof Behemoth — Blitz it for a hasty alpha-strike finisher that ends games out of nowhere.
- Avenger of Zendikar — Floods the board with plant tokens that survive after the blitzed body dies.
- Greater Good — Sacrifice your fatties before end-step death for explosive card draw, doubling on Henzie's dies draw.
- Ashnod's Altar — Converts dying blitzed creatures into mana to chain even more casts in a turn.
- Old Gnawbone — Generates treasures on attack, fueling repeated blitz casts and Henzie recasts.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana and ritual effects (Sol Ring, Jeska's Will, treasures) to power out fatties before the blitz discount comes online, plus sac outlets like Ashnod's Altar and Viscera Seer to bank value before the end-step sacrifice. Lean into Blood Artist–style aristocrats payoffs and recursion (Meren, Sheoldred, Eternal Witness) so dying creatures keep generating advantage. Top-end finishers (Craterhoof, Pathbreaker Ibex, Terastodon) and protection for Henzie tighten the deck into a high-power threat.
