The Commander

Face-down creatures get +1/+1.

{2}{U}: Turn target face-down creature face up.

Guide

Gameplan

Ixidor turns a pile of nondescript face-down 2/2s (now 3/3s) into a tempo-and-value engine, flipping morphs and disguised creatures face up at instant speed for blowouts and triggered abilities. You ramp into morphs, manifest cards off the top, and unmorph at the perfect moment to ambush attackers, counter removal, or generate huge ETB/unmorph value. The deck grinds card advantage and beats down with a wide board of buffed mystery creatures.

Strengths

  • His static +1/+1 makes every face-down creature a respectable 3/3 attacker and blocker for free
  • Instant-speed unmorph (and reduced via his ability) enables repeated combat blowouts and surprise effects
  • Manifest and morph give built-in card advantage and resilience, refilling the board after wraths
  • Mono-blue gives access to the format's best counterspells, card draw, and tutors to protect the plan

Weaknesses

  • Ixidor offers no card advantage himself and dies to all the same removal as any 4-toughness creature
  • Morph/manifest is a niche, narrow archetype—many face-down payoffs are weak in a vacuum
  • Mono-blue struggles with persistent enchantments, artifacts, and creature removal post-resolution
  • Without Ixidor on the field the face-down creatures revert to vanilla 2/2s, making the deck commander-dependent

Key Cards

  • Vesuvan Shapeshifter — Repeatable morph that re-flips each upkeep to copy or reset, generating endless value alongside Ixidor's discount.
  • Kheru Spellsnatcher — Unmorph to counter any spell and steal it, a devastating instant-speed trick Ixidor can flip cheaply.
  • Rattleclaw Mystic — Cheap mana dork that doubles as a morph body, ramping into your face-down army.
  • Brine Elemental — Unmorphing locks opponents out of untapping for a turn—repeatable with Vesuvan Shapeshifter for a soft lock.
  • Cloudstone Curio — Bounce your morphs to re-cast them, recurring ETB and unmorph value while triggering manifest synergies.
  • Mass Manipulation — Mono-blue payoff that steals multiple creatures, a strong closer the deck can ramp into.

Upgrade Path

Lean into the strongest morphs (Vesuvan Shapeshifter, Brine Elemental, Kheru Spellsnatcher) and add cost reducers and untappers like Training Grounds and Heightened Reflexes to spam unmorphs. Improve the mana base with fast rocks (Sol Ring, Mana Crypt) and stack counterspells/protection (Swan Song, Pact of Negation) to defend Ixidor. For a real engine, add Cloudstone Curio and manifest sources plus a backup commander-independent finisher like Mass Manipulation or a blue mill/draw wincon.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Beating down with a wide board of buffed face-down creatures and surprise unmorphs
  • ▸Locking opponents out with repeatable Brine Elemental + Vesuvan Shapeshifter untap denial
  • ▸Stealing opponents' threats with Mass Manipulation or Kheru Spellsnatcher and turning them sideways
  • ▸Grinding out the table with card advantage until a big blue finisher closes the game

Archetypes

  • Morph/Disguise Tribal — Ixidor buffs and cheaply flips face-down creatures, making the morph mechanic his core identity.
  • Tempo/Control — Mono-blue counters and bounce paired with surprise unmorph ambushes let you control the board and grind.
  • Aggro Beatdown — A wide board of 3/3 face-down creatures with hidden threats applies steady, evasive-ish pressure.
  • Blink/Value — Re-casting and re-manifesting creatures with bounce effects squeezes repeated ETB and morph value.
