Malcolm, Alluring Scoundrel
The Commander
Flying
Whenever Malcolm deals combat damage to a player, put a chorus counter on it. Draw a card, then discard a card. If there are four or more chorus counters on Malcolm, you may cast the discarded card without paying its mana cost.
Guide
Gameplan
Get Malcolm connecting early with flying and evasion, looting each combat to dig and fuel your graveyard. Once he reaches four chorus counters you start free-casting your discards — ideally fatties, big spells, or game-ending bombs — while a tempo-control shell protects him and clears blockers.
Strengths
- Cheap flash flier that generates card advantage and selection every combat
- Free-casting discards at 4+ counters can cheat out expensive bombs ahead of curve
- Mono-blue gives access to the deepest pool of counters, bounce, and protection
- Low mana value makes recasting after removal cheap and easy
Weaknesses
- Relies on connecting in combat; a single flying/reach blocker stalls the engine
- Needs four turns of damage (or doubling tricks) before the payoff comes online
- Mono-blue lacks efficient creature removal and struggles with go-wide boards
- Removal of Malcolm wipes the chorus counters, resetting all your progress
Key Cards
- Aqueous Form — Grants unblockable so Malcolm reliably connects and stacks chorus counters every turn.
- Rogue's Passage — Makes Malcolm unblockable to guarantee combat damage and keep the loot/free-cast engine running.
- Thassa, God of the Sea — Repeatedly makes Malcolm unblockable and scries to set up the loot trigger each combat.
- Brainstorm — Pairs with the loot to bury bad cards and ensures you discard exactly what you want to free-cast.
- Cyclonic Rift — A perfect free-cast target and a blowout finisher when you discard it at four counters.
- Sakashima of a Thousand Faces — Copies Malcolm for double the counters and a second card-advantage engine.
Upgrade Path
Add more unblockable enablers (Tetsuko Umezawa, Trailblazer's Boots, Spectral Flight) and counter-doublers like Sakashima to hit four chorus counters faster. Lean into high-impact free-cast targets — extra-turn spells, big X-spells, or game-warping sorceries — and pack cheap protection like Swan Song, Mother of Runes-style effects, and Heroic Intervention analogs. Tighten the mana with fast rocks (Sol Ring, Arcane Signet) and clean curve so you can recast Malcolm cheaply after removal.

- Spellslinger/Reanimator — Looting fills the yard and the free-cast lets you cheat out expensive spells you'd rather not pay for.
- Voltron/Evasion — Unblockable enablers turn Malcolm into a reliable damage and value engine you build around.
