Emry, Lurker of the Loch
The Commander
Affinity for artifacts (This spell costs less to cast for each artifact you control.)
When Emry enters, mill four cards.
: Choose target artifact card in your graveyard. You may cast that card this turn. (You still pay its costs. Timing rules still apply.)
Guide
Gameplan
Emry is a mono-blue artifact engine: she enters cheaply thanks to affinity, fills your graveyard, then recurs artifacts every turn so you can replay value pieces and combo loops. You flood the board with cheap and free artifacts, generate card advantage and mana, then assemble an infinite combo or grind to victory. Each turn you tap her to recast a key artifact from the yard, building toward a lock or kill.
Strengths
- Extremely cheap and easy to recast commander thanks to affinity, surviving removal cheaply
- Powerful artifact recursion engine that turns the graveyard into a second hand
- Enables a huge number of compact two- and three-card infinite combos
- Deep, well-supported card pool in mono-blue artifacts with strong card draw
Weaknesses
- Heavily commander-dependent; loses tempo badly if Emry is repeatedly removed or taxed
- Vulnerable to artifact sweepers like Vandalblast, Bane of Progress, and Cyclonic Rift
- Mono-blue means weak interaction with resolved permanents and no reliable removal for creatures
- Graveyard hate (Bojuka Bog, Rest in Peace) shuts off her recursion entirely
Key Cards
- Sensei's Divining Top — Self-recurring cantrip that loops with Emry for card selection and combo enablement.
- Mind Stone — Cheap ramp that lowers Emry's cost and can be recurred and cashed for cards.
- Sword of the Meek — Combos with Thopter Foundry for infinite tokens and life, recurred by Emry.
- Thopter Foundry — With Sword of the Meek and a sac outlet or mana, generates infinite thopters and life.
- Ashnod's Altar — Free sac outlet that fuels mana combos and powers Emry loops.
- The Reality Chip — Cheap artifact that gives sustained card advantage off the top once attached.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana like Mana Crypt, Mox Opal, and Mox Amber to power explosive starts and reduce Emry's cost further. Tighten the combo package (Time Sieve, Thopter Foundry, Sword of the Meek, Ashnod's Altar) and add tutors like Whir of Invention, Muddle the Mixture, and Reshape to find pieces. Round out with strong counterspells (Force of Will, Mana Drain) and protection like Lightning Greaves to keep your engine online.
