Sai, Master Thopterist
The Commander
Whenever you cast an artifact spell, create a 1/1 colorless Thopter artifact creature token with flying.
, Sacrifice two artifacts: Draw a card.
Guide
Gameplan
Flood the board with cheap artifacts to spit out a swarm of flying Thopters, then convert that excess into card advantage with Sai's sacrifice ability. You build a wide, evasive army while drawing into more gas, eventually overwhelming opponents through the air or feeding an artifact combo. Turn to turn you're deploying cheap artifacts, banking tokens, and refueling.
Strengths
- Generates a snowballing flying army from cards you'd play anyway
- Built-in card advantage engine via the sacrifice ability
- Cheap mono-blue commander with strong artifact synergy and counterspell support
- Excellent at going wide with evasive damage and supporting overrun effects
Weaknesses
- Mono-blue lacks efficient board wipe and artifact recursion outside of bounce/replay
- Vulnerable to board wipes that erase the token army for low investment
- Tokens are individually fragile 1/1s with no inherent protection
- Can be slow to close games without a payoff or combo finish
Key Cards
- Thopter Spy Network — Doubles as extra Thopter generation and a card-draw engine that pairs perfectly with Sai's swarm.
- Sai, Master Thopterist — The engine itself—every artifact cast nets a flyer and fuels relentless card draw.
- Mishra's Bauble — Free artifact spells that trigger Sai for a token at no real cost while replacing themselves.
- Cranial Plating — Turns your wide artifact board and Thopters into lethal commander-damage or evasive beats.
- Sai's Liberation — Mass token bounce/replay synergy aside, cheap artifacts like Ornithopter and Memnite spawn free Thopters.
- Coastal Piracy — Each evasive Thopter connecting refills your hand to keep the engine running.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana and cheap zero-cost artifacts (Ornithopter, Memnite, Tormod's Crypt, Bauble effects) to maximize free Sai triggers, then layer in a combo line like Krark-Clan Ironworks + Nim Deathmantle or Time Sieve for a hard finish. Improve interaction with efficient counterspells (Swan Song, Fierce Guardianship, Mana Drain) and protect your board with Cyclonic Rift and Teferi's Protection. Tighten the mana base with artifact-friendly rocks and untappers like Voltaic Key to enable explosive Thopter turns.
