Lobelia Sackville-Baggins
The Commander
Guide
Gameplan
Lobelia is a mono-black graveyard-hating value engine: flash her in (often as removal punishment) in response to an opponent's creature dying, exile it from their graveyard, and bank Treasure equal to its power to ramp into your big black payoffs. You'll grind value through removal, recursion, and forced sacrifice, then close with a fattened mana base and powerful black bombs or a combo finish.
Strengths
- Flash + menace make her hard to block and let you ambush combat or sandbag her as instant-speed value
- Treasure generation can be explosive when opponents lose large creatures, ramping into expensive payoffs
- Doubles as graveyard hate, denying reanimator and recursion decks key targets
- Mono-black gives access to the best tutors, removal, and card draw, making her consistent
- Cheap commander you can recast repeatedly thanks to Treasure-fueled mana
Weaknesses
- Her ETB is conditional—needs a creature to hit an opponent's graveyard from the battlefield that turn to do anything
- Whiffs entirely against token armies, exile-based removal, and indestructible/zero-power creatures
- Mono-black struggles with enchantments and resilient artifacts
- No evasion-based damage scaling; she only deals 3 herself
- Relies on opponents' boards or your own removal to trigger value, so she can sit idle
Key Cards
- Bojuka Bog — Reinforces the graveyard-hate theme while fixing your land drops.
- Village Rites — Cheap instant sacrifice outlet to feed your own creature into a graveyard and flash Lobelia in for Treasure.
- Ashnod's Altar — Free sac outlet that combos with Treasure ramp for explosive mana and aristocrats synergy.
- Dictate of Erebos — Flash-friendly edict engine that forces opponents to sacrifice, feeding Lobelia's trigger repeatedly.
- Black Market Connections — Treasure-and-card engine that pairs with Lobelia's ramp to keep mana flowing in mono-black.
- Bolas's Citadel — Turns your stockpiled mana and Treasures into a card-advantage and burst-damage finisher.
Upgrade Path
Add efficient instant-speed sacrifice outlets (Viscera Seer, Carrion Feeder) and edict effects so you control when creatures die and can flash Lobelia for maximum Treasure on your terms. Lean into fast mana (Dark Ritual, Mana Vault) and tutors (Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor) to find your payoff, then cap the curve with a scalable win like Torment of Hailfire or a Bolas's Citadel package; tighten the land base with fixing and graveyard-hate utility lands.
