Merry, Esquire of Rohan
The Commander
Haste
Merry has first strike as long as it's equipped.
Whenever you attack with Merry and another legendary creature, draw a card.
Guide
Gameplan
Merry is a cheap, hasty aggro commander that turns a wide board of legendary creatures into a card-advantage engine. You flood the board with legends (and Voltron up Merry with equipment), then attack each turn to draw multiple cards while beating face. The goal is to out-tempo and out-card the table while applying constant aggression in red-white.
Strengths
- Two-mana hasty commander that can attack the turn it lands and immediately threaten value.
- Card draw on attack offsets aggro's usual resource problem, keeping your hand full.
- First strike when equipped makes Merry a safe, evasive carrier for Voltron-style equipment.
- Cheap to recast, so commander tax stays manageable for an aggressive deck.
- RW has excellent legendary-creature support and equipment payoffs.
Weaknesses
- Card draw only triggers if you both attack with Merry AND have another legendary creature attacking—two conditions to enable.
- No built-in evasion, so Merry can be chump-blocked or stalled by go-wide defenses.
- Fragile body (2 MV) that dies to nearly all removal and combat tricks.
- RW lacks deep ramp and tutoring, so explosive turns can be inconsistent.
- Heavy reliance on creatures makes the deck vulnerable to board wipes.
Key Cards
- Pippin, Warden of Isengard — His natural partner, providing a second legendary attacker and protective synergy to reliably turn on Merry's draw trigger.
- Sram, Senior Edificer — Stacks extra card draw with every equipment and aura you cast to fuel Merry's Voltron plan.
- Hofri Ghostforge — A legendary creature that recurs your fallen legends, keeping the board full of attackers.
- Skullclamp — Premier equipment that gives Merry first strike while refilling your hand off cheap creatures.
- Adeline, Resplendent Cathar — Generates legendary-adjacent token pressure and pumps your attackers while you swing wide.
- Reki, the History of Kamigawa — Draws a card for every legendary spell you cast, doubling down on the legends-matter engine.
Upgrade Path
Add cheap, efficient equipment (Skullclamp, Lightning Greaves, Embercleave) and more two-mana legendary creatures to consistently turn on the draw trigger turn after turn. Improve mana with Boros signets, fast lands, and a tight curve so you can deploy multiple legends per turn, and include protection like Teferi's Protection or Flawless Maneuver to survive wraths. Tutors such as Stoneforge Mystic and Steelshaper's Gift sharpen the Voltron line for higher-power tables.
