The Commander

Aang has vigilance as long as there's a Lesson card in your graveyard.

Whenever another creature you control dies, put a +1/+1 counter on Aang.

Guide

Gameplan

Aang is a cheap GW aristocrats-meets-voltron commander who fattens up every time another creature you control dies. Flood the board with cheap, expendable creatures and tokens, then sacrifice or trade them away to pile +1/+1 counters onto Aang while you grind value. He becomes a vigilant, ever-growing threat that can attack and block simultaneously once a Lesson sits in your graveyard.

Strengths

  • Free, repeatable growth that snowballs in any token or sacrifice deck
  • Vigilance keeps him on offense and defense, making him hard to race
  • Cheap mana value (3) means fast deployment and easy recasting after removal
  • GW gives access to deep token, counter-synergy, and recursion packages
  • Naturally rewards board wipes and combat trades that opponents make

Weaknesses

  • Counters vanish if Aang is removed, and GW has weak ways to protect a commander
  • No evasion built in, so a big Aang can be chump-blocked all day
  • Relies on a steady stream of dying creatures—stalls without sac fodder
  • Vigilance trigger needs a Lesson card, which can be awkward outside the Avatar set pool
  • Vulnerable to exile-based removal and edicts that hit Aang himself

Key Cards

  • Skullclamp — Turns every dying 1-toughness token into two cards plus a counter on Aang.
  • Ashnod's Altar — Free sacrifice outlet that ramps you while triggering Aang's counter ability.
  • Goblin Bombardment — No-mana sac outlet that converts dying creatures into damage and counters.
  • Bennie Bracks, Zoologist — Token generation plus card draw fuels both the board and the sacrifice engine.
  • Rampaging Baloths — Landfall token maker that keeps the sac fodder flowing all game.
  • Anointed Procession — Doubles your token output, multiplying the bodies you can feed to Aang.
  • Rancor — Recurring trample makes a counter-laden Aang push damage past blockers.

Upgrade Path

Add free sacrifice outlets (Viscera Seer, Carrion Feeder, Phyrexian Altar) and reliable token engines to maximize death triggers, then layer in evasion and protection like Rancor, Snakeskin Veil, and Heroic Intervention so Aang can actually connect and survive removal. For higher power, lean into an aristocrats kill with Blood Artist, Zulaport Cutthroat, and a sacrifice loop, or pivot to a proliferate/counters package with Doubling Season and Hardened Scales to make Aang lethal in a single attack.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Commander damage from an oversized, vigilant Aang with trample or evasion
  • ▸Aristocrats drain via Blood Artist effects as your creatures die
  • ▸Wide token alpha strikes backed by anthem effects
  • ▸Proliferating Aang's counters to absurd sizes for a lethal swing

Archetypes

  • Aristocrats — His death trigger rewards sacrificing creatures repeatedly to grow and grind value.
  • Tokens — Cheap expendable bodies are perfect fuel for both attacks and sacrifice outlets.
  • Voltron — Stacked +1/+1 counters turn Aang into a one-shot commander damage threat.
  • Counters Matter — Aang feeds proliferate and counter-payoff synergies as he accumulates +1/+1s.
