Drafna, Founder of Lat-Nam
The Commander
: Return target artifact you control to its owner's hand.
,
: Copy target artifact spell you control. (The copy becomes a token.)
Guide
Gameplan
Drafna is a mono-blue artifact engine commander: cheap, deployable on turn two, and built to abuse enters-the-battlefield artifacts and artifact-spell value. You bounce your own artifacts to reuse ETBs and dodge removal with the first ability, then turn extra mana into doubled artifacts (mana rocks, eldrazi, bombs) with the copy ability. Win by snowballing mana and card advantage into a big payoff or an artifact combo.
Strengths
- Two-mana commander that comes down early and immediately enables value loops.
- Cheap repeatable artifact bounce protects key pieces and recurs ETB effects.
- Copy ability doubles up expensive artifact spells for huge tempo and mana swings.
- Mono-blue gives access to the best counterspells, draw, and tutors for consistency.
Weaknesses
- The copy ability is slow and mana-intensive (
plus tap), so it rarely closes games alone.
- Mono-blue struggles to interact with resolved permanents and lacks efficient removal.
- Heavily reliant on the commander staying on the battlefield to function.
- Vulnerable to artifact sweepers (Vandalblast, Bane of Progress) that wreck your board.
Key Cards
- Mystic Forge — Lets you cast artifacts off the top, fueling Drafna's bounce-and-replay and copy loops with endless cards.
- Sai, Master Thopterist — Pairs with Drafna's bounce and copy to generate Thopters every time you recast artifacts.
- Emry, Lurker of the Loch — Cheap artifact recursion and casting engine that turns bounced artifacts into card advantage.
- Dramatic Reversal — With Isochron Scepter and enough rock mana it makes infinite mana to fuel Drafna's copy ability.
- Hangarback Walker — A bounce target that makes Thopters on death and a great artifact spell to copy for a doubled board.
- Walking Ballista — Copyable artifact spell and a mana sink that becomes a wincon with infinite mana.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana (Mana Crypt, Mana Vault, Sol Ring) and efficient tutors (Whir of Invention, Fabricate, Reshape) to find your engines faster and feed the copy ability. Lean into a compact combo finish—Isochron Scepter + Dramatic Reversal with mana rocks into Walking Ballista or Aetherflux Reservoir—backed by free counterspells like Force of Will and Pact of Negation. Tighten the mana base with artifact-friendly lands (Ancient Tomb, Inventors' Fair, Academy Ruins) to maximize consistency.

Archetypes

- Combo — Infinite-mana engines feed the copy ability or X-spell artifacts like Walking Ballista to win.
- Control — Mono-blue counters and draw shell defends a value engine that grinds opponents out.
- Blink/Value — The bounce ability acts as a budget blink loop for artifact ETB creatures.
