Lady Octopus, Inspired Inventor
The Commander
Whenever you draw your first or second card each turn, put an ingenuity counter on Lady Octopus.
: You may cast an artifact spell from your hand with mana value less than or equal to the number of ingenuity counters on Lady Octopus without paying its mana cost.
Guide
Gameplan
Cheat out artifacts for free by stacking ingenuity counters through repeated card draw, then untap Lady Octopus to chain big artifacts into play. You play a low-curve draw-heavy game early, building counters, and convert that into an artifact-fueled board, mana rocks, and ultimately a combo or overwhelming value engine. Each turn you can drop one free artifact whose mana value is at or below your counter total, so the goal is to draw two cards every turn while ramping your counters high enough to dump Karn, Wurmcoil, or combo pieces for free.
Strengths
- One-mana commander that comes down turn one and starts generating counters immediately with any draw engine.
- Mono-blue gives access to the deepest pool of card draw, counterspells, and tutors to fuel and protect the engine.
- Free artifact casts effectively double your mana each turn, snowballing into huge swings.
- Counters persist, so even a single big draw turn permanently raises your free-cast ceiling.
Weaknesses
- Counter accumulation is slow early; you often can't cast meaningful artifacts until several turns in.
- Only one free artifact per turn unless you untap her, capping raw output.
- Heavily commander-dependent—removal or repeated targeting stalls the whole engine.
- Mono-blue lacks efficient removal and struggles against fast aggro and resilient enchantments.
- Doesn't draw cards itself; you must supply the card advantage that powers her.
Key Cards
- The One Ring — Massive repeatable draw that pumps her counters fast while protecting you the turn it enters.
- Mystic Remora — Cheap, repeatable card draw that reliably triggers both first and second draw counters early.
- Brain Freeze — With storm and draw it's a finisher, but more importantly cheap cantrips feed counters consistently.
- Sai, Master Thopterist — Turns your free artifact casts into a token army and provides draw to add counters.
- Thought Vessel — Free mana rock and no maximum hand size to hoard artifacts you'll cheat in later.
- Seedborn Muse — Untap Lady Octopus on every turn to cast multiple free artifacts per round.
- Karn, Silver Golem — A high-value free cast target and an artifact-animation combo engine once counters are high.
Upgrade Path
Maximize cheap, repeatable card draw (Mystic Remora, The One Ring, Sylvan Library effects in blue like Sensei's Divining Top loops) so you reliably hit two draws each turn and grow counters fast. Add untappers (Seedborn Muse, Wanderwine Prophets effects, or Pemmin's Aura) to cast multiple free artifacts per round, and build toward a tight artifact combo finish. Tighten the curve with strong free-cast targets and add protection (Swiftfoot Boots, counterspells) so the commander survives the inevitable removal.

Win Conditions
- ▸Cheat out a finisher like Wurmcoil Engine or Blightsteel Colossus and beat down, or storm off with Brain Freeze.
- ▸Assemble an artifact combo (Karn + animation, or infinite mana rocks) for a deterministic kill.
- ▸Go wide with Sai thopters or token-makers buffed by artifact synergies.
- ▸Grind out an insurmountable card and board advantage, then close with a flooded artifact board.
Archetypes
- Artifacts (Big Mana / Cheat) — Her tap ability casts artifacts for free, rewarding a high-density artifact build with expensive payoffs.
- Spellslinger / Draw-go Control — Cantrips and draw spells both feed counters and let her sit in a counterspell-heavy control shell.
- Combo — Free artifact casts plus untappers enable artifact-based loops like Karn animation or mana-rock combos.
- Thopter/Token — Sai and similar payoffs convert each free artifact into a growing board for go-wide finishes.
