Mizzix of the Izmagnus
The Commander
Whenever you cast an instant or sorcery spell with mana value greater than the number of experience counters you have, you get an experience counter.
Instant and sorcery spells you cast cost less to cast for each experience counter you have.
Guide
Gameplan
Build a stockpile of experience counters by casting instants and sorceries, then snowball into a turn where your spells cost almost nothing. Use that cost reduction to chain card draw, rituals, and big X spells into an explosive lethal finisher. Early game you ramp and accumulate counters; mid-to-late game you go off in a single explosive turn.
Strengths
- Cost reduction compounds, enabling massive turns where spells become nearly free
- Excellent at storming off with cheap draw and ritual spells
- X spells scale absurdly well once counters pile up
- Strong card advantage engines native to blue and red
Weaknesses
- Loses all cost reduction if Mizzix dies and gets removed/re-cast tax escalates
- Slow to start before counters accumulate
- Vulnerable to counterspells and stax that punish spell-heavy decks
- No built-in interaction; can be raced by faster combo or aggro
Key Cards
- Jeska's Will — Triples your mana off counters and refills your hand, fueling an explosive Mizzix turn.
- Mizzix's Mastery — Reanimates a huge sorcery like Expropriate or Insurrection with overload for game-ending value.
- Aetherflux Reservoir — Cheap spells with Mizzix gain massive life and let you fire off lethal 50-damage blasts.
- Reiterate — With cost reduction it buys back rituals for infinite mana, a premier Mizzix combo piece.
- Comet, Stellar Pup — Just kidding—focus instead on Increasing Vengeance and Past in Flames to recast your storm pieces.
- Past in Flames — Flashes back your entire graveyard of cheap spells for a devastating storm turn.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana and rituals (Mana Vault, Dramatic Reversal + Isochron Scepter, Pyretic/Desperate Ritual) to enable explosive turns, and tutors like Mystical Tutor and Merchant Scroll to find your combo pieces. Tighten the spell suite toward efficient draw (Windfall, Frantic Search) and dedicated win conditions, and include protection like Pact of Negation and Veil of Summer to push through interaction. Lower your overall curve so cost reduction reaches free-spell territory faster.
