Ragost, Deft Gastronaut

Mana value2EDHREC#5,736

The Commander

Artifacts you control are Foods in addition to their other types and have "{2}, {T}, Sacrifice this artifact: You gain 3 life."

{1}, {T}, Sacrifice a Food: Ragost deals 3 damage to each opponent.

At the beginning of each end step, if you gained life this turn, untap Ragost.

Guide

Gameplan

Flood the board with cheap artifacts (which all become sacrificeable Foods), then loop Ragost's ability: sac a Food to deal 3 to each opponent, gain life off another Food to untap Ragost, and repeat. You build incremental artifact value early and pivot into a life-gain engine that fires multiple Ragost pings per turn to burn out the whole table.

Strengths

  • Turns every artifact into a Food and a damage source, making cheap mana rocks and trinkets do double duty
  • The untap trigger lets Ragost activate multiple times per turn, scaling burn with your lifegain
  • Attacks all opponents at once, ignoring blockers and board state
  • Cheap two-mana commander that's easy to recast and protect

Weaknesses

  • Heavily artifact-dependent, so artifact wipes (Vandalblast, Bane of Progress) cripple the deck
  • Damage relies on Ragost staying alive; cheap removal stalls the whole engine
  • Needs both a Food to sac AND lifegain each cycle, which can be mana-intensive without free engines
  • Lifegain doesn't directly advance the board, so a slow draw can fall behind aggressive decks

Key Cards

  • Cathar's CrusadeOff-theme but the real engine is recurring artifacts; instead lean on token makers—see below.
  • Trading PostRepeatedly creates Goat tokens and gains life, fueling both Food sacrifice and the untap trigger.
  • Krark-Clan IronworksSacrifices artifacts for mana, helping you power out repeated Ragost activations.
  • Disciple of the VaultEach sacrificed Food drains an opponent for extra reach alongside Ragost's pings.
  • Sword of the AnimistCheap artifact that ramps and is itself a Food, embodying the deck's double-duty plan.
  • Anointed ProcessionDoubles artifact and Food token production, multiplying your ammunition.

Upgrade Path

Build toward a deterministic loop: pair a free or cheap Food/token generator (Academy Manufactor, Trading Post, Ophiomancer-style recurring tokens) with a free lifegain source and a sac outlet so each Ragost cycle costs near-nothing. Add fast mana (Mana Crypt, Sol Ring, Mox Diamond) and tutors like Enlightened Tutor to assemble the engine faster, and protect Ragost with cheap interaction (Swords to Plowshares, Deflecting Swat). Disciple of the Vault and Marionette Master add redundant kill conditions independent of Ragost's combat-step pings.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • Loop Ragost activations with repeatable Food tokens and lifegain to burn all opponents to zero
  • Combine sacrifice payoffs like Disciple of the Vault or Mayhem Devil to drain the table
  • Go wide with artifact tokens and convert them to burst damage in a single turn

Archetypes

  • AristocratsSacrificing Foods for value and damage is the core loop, rewarding sac payoffs and recursion.
  • ArtifactsRagost makes every artifact a Food, so cheap artifacts and rocks become both ramp and ammo.
  • LifegainThe untap trigger keys off gaining life, so lifegain engines directly enable more burn.
  • ComboFree or repeatable Food generation plus lifegain enables near-infinite Ragost ping loops.
