Théoden, King of Rohan
The Commander
Whenever Théoden or another Human you control enters, target creature gains double strike until end of turn.
Guide
Gameplan
Flood the board with Humans, using each one's entry to grant double strike to a beater (often a wide-attacking token swarm or a single Voltron threat) and crash in for lethal red-white aggression. You curve out cheap Humans early, then chain enters-the-battlefield triggers to repeatedly double damage output. The deck closes games fast through combat before slower decks set up.
Strengths
- Cheap 3-mana commander that immediately enables aggressive starts
- Double strike turns mediocre attackers into game-enders, especially with trample or anthems
- Deep, well-supported Human tribal pool in Boros colors
- Token-makers create many ETB triggers, stacking double strike repeatedly
Weaknesses
- Boros lacks card draw and ramp, leading to running out of gas
- Heavily reliant on combat damage—vulnerable to board wipes and fog
- Double strike on a single attacker is fragile to spot removal/blockers
- Two-color identity means no easy access to recursion or interaction tutors
Key Cards
- Adeline, Resplendent Cathar — Generates a Human token for each opponent on attack, fueling Théoden triggers and going wide.
- Hkey, Galadhrim Wildcat — Cheap repeatable Human token engine that triggers Théoden every turn.
- Eternal Witness — Wait—not in color; skip.
- Embercleave — Lands cheaply after a wide attack and pairs with double strike for explosive lethal damage.
- Hero of Bladehold — Battle cry plus token generation supercharges a wide Human attack.
- Cathars' Crusade — Snowballs your board as each Human ETB pumps the whole team alongside double strike triggers.
Upgrade Path
Add card-advantage engines that fit Boros aggression—Skullclamp, Reconnaissance, and impulse draw like Outpost Siege—to refuel after wipes. Tighten the curve with efficient Humans and token producers (Captain of the Watch, Brimaz), and include protection like Heroic Intervention, Boros Charm, and Flawless Maneuver to survive board wipes. Top-end finishers such as Embercleave, Coordinated Charge, and Craterhoof-style overrun effects (or red equivalents) convert double strike into one-turn kills.
