The Commander

When Llawan enters, return all blue creatures your opponents control to their owners' hands.

Your opponents can't cast blue creature spells.

Guide

Gameplan

Llawan is a mono-blue control/tempo commander whose main weapon is her ETB: blink or recast her to repeatedly bounce all of opponents' blue creatures, while her static ability soft-locks any opponent trying to play blue creatures at all. You stall the board, draw cards, deploy your own threats, and grind incremental advantage until you can land a finisher or combo. Outside of blue-heavy pods she's just a 4-mana value engine, so the deck leans on the wider mono-U toolbox more than the commander herself.

Strengths

  • Hard hoses blue creature decks—locks opponents out of casting blue creatures entirely
  • ETB bounce is repeatable via blink and recasting for relentless tempo
  • Mono-blue gives access to the deck's best card draw, counters, and protection
  • Cheap commander at 4 mana that can come down early and often

Weaknesses

  • Almost entirely dead against non-blue opponents—her abilities do nothing
  • Mono-color means no removal for resolved permanents beyond bounce and limited wraths
  • No inherent way to close games; needs dedicated win conditions
  • A single-target political tool that often annoys one player rather than advancing your board

Key Cards

  • Deadeye Navigator — Soulbonds to Llawan to blink her each turn, bouncing every opponent's blue creature repeatedly.
  • Ghostly Flicker — Flickers Llawan to retrigger her board-clearing ETB at instant speed.
  • Cyclonic Rift — Provides the asymmetrical board wipe Llawan can't, hitting every color and creating a finish window.
  • Rhystic Study — Premier mono-blue card advantage engine to fuel a grindy control plan.
  • Mana Drain — Counters threats while ramping you toward your bigger plays and finishers.
  • Thassa, Deep-Dwelling — Untaps and provides repeatable blink to abuse Llawan's ETB on your end step.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana (Sol Ring, Mana Crystals, Mind Stone) and stronger interaction (Force of Will, Fierce Guardianship, Pact of Negation) so you can protect a real wincon. Commit to a tight combo finish—Isochron Scepter + Dramatic Reversal, or a Thassa's Oracle line—since Llawan won't win on her own. Lean into more blink enablers and tutors (Mystical Tutor, Long-Term Plans) to assemble your engine consistently.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Commander damage or evasive beaters like Tetsuko-enabled creatures after stabilizing
  • ▸A combo finish such as Laboratory Maniac/Thassa's Oracle with deck-emptying draw
  • ▸Big mill or extra-turn package backed by counters
  • ▸Cyclonic Rift overload into an alpha strike

Archetypes

  • Control — Mono-blue counters, card draw, and Llawan's bounce let you dictate the pace and grind opponents out.
  • Blink — Flicker effects turn her ETB bounce into a repeatable tempo and disruption engine.
  • Tempo/Tax — Her static lock and bounce keep opponents off-balance while you advance your own board.
  • Combo — Mono-U supports tutored win combos backed by counterspell protection since Llawan alone can't win.

Combos

  • Llawan, Cephalid Empress + Painter's Servant

→ Opponents can't cast creature spells, Lock

Combos via Commander Spellbook.
