Phlage, Titan of Fire's Fury
The Commander
When Phlage enters, sacrifice it unless it escaped.
Whenever Phlage enters or attacks, it deals 3 damage to any target and you gain 3 life.
Escape—, Exile five other cards from your graveyard. (You may cast this card from your graveyard for its escape cost.)
Guide
Gameplan
Phlage is a recurring Lightning Helix on a stick: cast it from hand as a sorcery-speed Helix (it sacrifices itself), then fill your graveyard and repeatedly escape it for to ping, gain life, and beat down. Build a spellslinger/control shell that grinds incremental damage and lifegain while picking off creatures and players, then close with attacks or burn.
Strengths
- Extremely resilient—lives in the graveyard and keeps coming back, dodging most spot removal and board wipes
- Built-in lifegain offsets aggro and fuels Boros lifegain payoffs
- Repeated 3-damage pings act as both removal and reach to finish opponents
- Low mana value (3) and flexible casting make it easy to deploy early and often
- Generates value every escape, grinding card-by-card advantage in long games
Weaknesses
- Escape needs five cards exiled each cast, so it competes with other graveyard strategies and can run you dry
- Graveyard hate (Rest in Peace, Bojuka Bog) shuts off escape entirely
- Boros lacks card draw and ramp, so fuel and mana can be tight
- 3 damage per trigger is slow against high-life or token-heavy tables
- Self-sacrifice when cast from hand means it whiffs as a permanent unless escaped
Key Cards
- Faithless Looting — Cheaply digs and dumps cards into the yard to fuel escape and find pieces.
- Underworld Breach — Turns the graveyard into a resource engine and can chain Phlage with other escape/recursion.
- Dockside Extortionist — Explosive ramp that helps pay multiple escape costs in a turn.
- Anje's Ravager — Repeatedly fills the graveyard to keep escape online while drawing cards.
- Sevinne's Reclamation — Recurs cheap spells and helps reload after exiling your yard for escape.
- Sunbird's Invocation — Casting Phlage and other spells generates extra free value to outpace the table.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana and rituals (Jeska's Will, Mana Geyser) so you can escape Phlage multiple times per turn, and lean into self-mill/looting (Cathartic Reunion, Tormenting Voice) to keep the yard stocked. Include graveyard-hate protection plans and recursion like Sevinne's Reclamation, then top end with payoffs such as Sunbird's Invocation, Aetherflux Reservoir, and Underworld Breach to convert your engine into a true combo finish.
Core Cards
The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.
Win Conditions
- ▸Repeated Phlage escape triggers as direct burn, picking off players one by one
- ▸Beatdown with a 6/6 (or larger) attacker that pings and gains life each swing
- ▸Aetherflux Reservoir or similar lifegain payoffs converting gained life into a wincon
- ▸Underworld Breach loops generating overwhelming value or repeated burn
Archetypes
- Spellslinger — Phlage rewards a low-curve instant/sorcery shell that fills the yard and chains escape casts.
- Control — Repeatable removal and lifegain let you stabilize and grind opponents out of resources.
- Lifegain — Each trigger gains 3 life, enabling payoffs like Aetherflux Reservoir and lifegain triggers.
- Graveyard Value — Escape mechanics turn the graveyard into a recurring engine alongside flashback and recursion.
