Rem Karolus, Stalwart Slayer
The Commander
Flying, haste
If a spell would deal damage to you or another permanent you control, prevent that damage.
If a spell would deal damage to an opponent or a permanent an opponent controls, it deals that much damage plus 1 instead.
Guide
Gameplan
Rem Karolus turns your burn and damage-based spells into a relentless beatdown engine, adding +1 to every spell that hits opponents while making you immune to spell damage. You play a low-curve spellslinger deck, deploying Rem early and chaining cheap burn at faces or using big X-spells to close games. Win by direct burn, spell-fueled combat, or copying damage spells for lethal bursts.
Strengths
- Built-in damage immunity makes you safe from board wipes like Blasphemous Act and Pyroclasm, and from opposing burn entirely
- Every damage spell hits harder, turning cantrip burn into efficient removal and reach
- Cheap 3-mana flying haste body that can commit to combat immediately
- Excellent at punishing creature decks while keeping your own board intact
Weaknesses
- The damage bonus only triggers when Rem is on the battlefield, so removal shuts down a core piece of the plan
- RW lacks card draw and ramp, so you can run out of gas quickly
- Damage-only effect does nothing against indestructible, hexproof from spells, or sacrifice-based threats
- Vulnerable to creature-based and combat-centric strategies that don't care about your spell immunity
Key Cards
- Fireball — X-burn spells scale into the hundreds of damage and gain +1, making them clean kill spells with Rem out.
- Comet Storm — Multikicker lets you split lethal damage across multiple opponents, each instance boosted by Rem.
- Chandra's Ignition — Deals your biggest creature's power +1 to every opponent and their creatures while sparing your board.
- Lightning Helix — Cheap, repeatable removal and reach that the +1 turns into a 4-damage two-for-one effect.
- Solphim, Mighty Cataclysm — Stacks multiplicative damage doubling on top of Rem's bonus for explosive burn turns.
- Birgi, God of Storytelling — Generates ramp off your spell chain, helping fuel the otherwise mana-hungry burn plan.
Upgrade Path
Add damage multipliers like Fiery Emancipation, Furnace of Rath, and Torbran, Thane of Red Fell to convert single spells into lethal, and prioritize cost reducers and ritual ramp (Birgi, Jeska's Will, treasures) to power out big X-spells. Improve card advantage with red impulse draw like Wheel of Misfortune and Underworld Breach loops, and tighten the curve so Rem's bonus applies to the highest density of damage spells possible.
