The Commander

Whenever Tui and La become tapped, draw a card.

Whenever Tui and La become untapped, put a +1/+1 counter on them.

Guide

Gameplan

Tui and La is a mono-blue value engine that rewards repeatedly tapping and untapping your commander—each tap draws a card and each untap grows it. You assemble cheap tappers (convoke, crew, mana abilities), untappers, and vigilance/blink effects to loop the trigger every turn while sculpting your hand, then close with a swollen, evasive attacker or a card-advantage-fueled control finish.

Strengths

  • Built-in card advantage that snowballs every time you tap it, refilling your hand for free
  • Naturally grows into a large evasive threat through untap +1/+1 counters
  • Mono-blue gives access to the best counterspells, card draw, and tap/untap effects
  • Cheap four-mana commander that does work immediately on the turn it lands
  • Low color requirement makes fixing trivial and frees slots for utility lands

Weaknesses

  • Single-target removal shuts off the entire engine and you must recast
  • Mono-blue struggles to interact with resolved permanents and lacks creature/enchantment removal
  • Card draw doesn't equal board impact—can durdle and fall behind aggressive boards
  • Needs setup pieces to reliably loop tap/untap, so it can stall without enablers
  • No built-in haste or protection, leaving the commander vulnerable each turn

Key Cards

  • Thousand-Year Elixir — Lets you tap the commander for its ability the turn it enters and adds an extra untap each turn.
  • Intruder Alarm — Untaps your tapped creatures whenever a creature enters, enabling repeated untap triggers and counters.
  • Kiora's Follower — Untaps Tui and La on demand to bank a +1/+1 counter and reset it for another tap.
  • Seedborn Muse — Untaps the commander every untap step, triggering both draw setups and counter growth across the table.
  • Vigilance — Effects granting vigilance let it attack and stay up to keep tapping for cards via convoke or mana abilities.
  • Thassa, Deep-Dwelling — Blinks the commander to untap it for a counter and provides repeatable scry plus board protection.
  • Cyclonic Rift — The premier mono-blue blowout to clear the way for your evasive, counter-loaded commander to close.

Upgrade Path

Add reliable untap loops—Intruder Alarm with cheap creatures, Seedborn Muse, or Aphetto Alchemist plus mana rocks—to convert draws into mana and counters, then layer protection like Lightning Greaves, Heroic Intervention effects, and counterspells to keep the engine online. Tighten the mana base with fast rocks (Sol Ring, Mana Crypt) and add a clean combo or alt-win (Thassa's Oracle with a self-mill enabler, or Aetherflux Reservoir) so your card advantage actually closes games rather than just spinning your wheels.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Commander damage from a counter-swollen, evasive Tui and La
  • ▸Out-resourcing the table with constant draws into a Cyclonic Rift or counterspell-protected wincon
  • ▸Infinite or near-infinite card draw paired with a payoff like Laboratory Maniac, Jace, or Aetherflux Reservoir
  • ▸Big mono-blue finishers like Stroke of Genius or a token swarm enabled by repeated untaps

Archetypes

  • Tap/Untap Value Engine — Convoke, crew, and mana-rock taps plus untappers turn the commander into a relentless draw and growth loop.
  • Control — Mono-blue counters, bounce, and card flow let you stabilize while the commander refills your hand.
  • Voltron — Untap counters and blue evasion/protection grow Tui and La into a one- or two-hit kill threat.
  • Spellslinger — Endless card draw fuels a critical mass of instants and sorceries backed by Aetherflux or storm-style finishes.
