The Commander

Flying

When Wan Shi Tong enters, target nonland permanent's owner puts it into their library second from the top or on the bottom.

Whenever one or more cards are put into a library from anywhere, create two 1/1 colorless Spirit creature tokens with "This token can't block or be blocked by non-Spirit creatures."

Guide

Gameplan

Wan Shi Tong turns Magic's most mundane card-selection effects into a token engine: every Brainstorm, scry, fateseal, or tuck spell spits out a pair of evasive Spirits. You grind value with cantrips and library manipulation while assembling a wide, flying-ish board, then close with anthems or a single big swing. The ETB tuck also doubles as flexible interaction, neutralizing a threat or hatebear while the commander sticks.

Strengths

  • Mono-blue consistency with deep access to card draw, counterspells, and library manipulation
  • Converts low-opportunity-cost cantrips (Brainstorm, Ponder, Jace) into repeatable token generation
  • ETB tuck is unconditional removal that hits any nonland permanent, even indestructible/hexproof in many cases
  • Spirit tokens that can't be blocked by non-Spirits give a reliable, hard-to-stop clock

Weaknesses

  • 1/1 tokens are individually weak and fold to a single board wipe
  • Mono-blue struggles to remove resolved permanents and enchantments outside the commander itself
  • Engine is grindy and can be slow against fast combo decks
  • Heavily reliant on the commander being on the board to monetize all that library shuffling

Key Cards

  • Brainstorm — Draws three and puts two cards back into your library, triggering Wan Shi Tong for a free pair of Spirits.
  • Jace, the Mind Sculptor — Fateseal and Brainstorm modes both put cards into a library every turn, making tokens while controlling the game.
  • Cyclonic Rift — The premier mono-blue reset that lets your wide Spirit board swing in for the kill unopposed.
  • Coat of Arms — Massive payoff that turns your tribal Spirit tokens into a lethal army out of nowhere.
  • Ephemerate — Blinks Wan Shi Tong to re-trigger the tuck removal and reset it around removal cheaply.
  • Intruder Alarm — Pairs with mass token production and tap effects to enable powerful, sometimes infinite, untap loops.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana (Sol Ring, Mana Crystal, Mana Vault) and free interaction (Force of Will, Fierce Guardianship) to keep the engine online against faster tables. Lean into a blink package—Conjurer's Closet, Deadeye Navigator, Eldrazi Displacer—to abuse the ETB tuck as repeatable removal, and pick up token doublers plus more anthems to convert your Spirit production into faster kills. Round it out with Cyclonic Rift, Pongify-style cheap removal, and tutors like Mystical Tutor to find your payoffs consistently.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Anthem effects (Coat of Arms, Intangible Virtue, Door of Destinies) turning the Spirit swarm lethal
  • ▸Evasive Spirit beatdown enabled by the can't-be-blocked-by-non-Spirits clause
  • ▸Cyclonic Rift overload followed by an all-out alpha strike
  • ▸Combo finishes via Intruder Alarm untap loops or token-doubler engines

Archetypes

  • Tokens — Nearly every library-touching spell creates two Spirits, snowballing a board that anthems can finish.
  • Spellslinger / Control — Mono-blue lets you lean on counters and cantrips, each of which advances your token plan while you protect the board.
  • Stax-lite / Tempo — The repeatable tuck plus countermagic keeps opponents off key permanents while you out-grind them.
  • Combo — Intruder Alarm and token-doubling effects open lines toward token-based or untap-based loops.
