Thassa, God of the Sea
The Commander
Indestructible
As long as your devotion to blue is less than five, Thassa isn't a creature. (Each in the mana costs of permanents you control counts toward your devotion to blue.)
At the beginning of your upkeep, scry 1.
: Target creature you control can't be blocked this turn.
Guide
Gameplan
Thassa is a resilient mono-blue engine commander: she's an indestructible enchantment that scries every upkeep, smooths draws, pushes a single creature through unblocked, and only attacks once your devotion to blue hits five. Most builds play her as a value/control shell using ETB blink, card advantage, and a single threat you make unblockable to grind out the table.
Strengths
- Indestructible and usually not even a creature, so she dodges removal and board wipes entirely
- Free upkeep scry every turn provides consistent card selection and combo digging
- Mono-blue gives access to the format's best counterspells, draw, and tutors at a low color-screw risk
- Cheap, repeatable unblockable enabler turns any creature into reliable damage or trigger delivery
Weaknesses
- No card advantage by herself beyond scry; the deck must supply its own engines
- Mono-blue struggles with enchantments, artifacts, and big resolved threats once countermagic runs out
- Low devotion early means she's a do-nothing enchantment that won't pressure life totals
- Single-target unblockable is slow as a primary wincon and easy to outrace at higher power tables
Key Cards
- Thassa's Oracle — Pairs with empty-library effects for a clean blue win and adds devotion.
- Demonic Consultation — Exiles your library to set up an immediate Thassa's Oracle win.
- Cyclonic Rift — The premier mono-blue board reset to break parity and push damage through.
- Rhystic Study — Mono-blue's best repeatable card-advantage engine to fuel control plans.
- Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx — Turns high blue devotion into explosive mana for X-spells and combos.
Upgrade Path
Lean into a tight combo finish (Thassa's Oracle + Demonic Consultation/Tainted Pact) backed by free counterspells like Force of Will, Force of Negation, and Pact of Negation to protect the kill. Add fast mana (Mana Crypt, Mana Vault, Sol Ring) and strong cantrips/tutors (Mystical Tutor, Brainstorm, Ponder) so the scry engine consistently assembles the win, and round out interaction with Cyclonic Rift and Mana Drain.

Win Conditions
- ▸Thassa's Oracle plus a library-emptying effect like Demonic Consultation or Tainted Pact
- ▸Repeatedly making one large or saboteur creature unblockable for incremental or commander damage
- ▸Cyclonic Rift overload followed by an unanswered attack
- ▸Big-mana X-spell or infinite-mana payoff powered by Nykthos devotion
Archetypes
- Control — Indestructible permanent plus mono-blue countermagic and bounce lets you police the table while scrying to relevant answers.
- Combo — Reliable upkeep scry digs toward Thassa's Oracle / Demonic Consultation and other compact blue combos.
- Voltron / Pseudo-Tempo — Cheap unblockable enabler lets a single evasive threat or commander connect for damage or saboteur triggers.
- Devotion Ramp — Stacking blue pips activates Nykthos for big mana payoffs and switches Thassa on as a beater.
